Why Is a Muslim Man Allowed to Marry up to Four Wives?

By Editorial Staff

Why does Islam allow a Muslim man to marry more than one wife?

Allah says in the Qur’an:

Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice. (An-Nisaa’ 4:3)

So, this what the Qur’an says; marrying more than one woman is optional; permitted. It’s not the rule.

Still, it is difficult to be just between one’s wives as God confirms in the same chapter:

You are never able to be fair and just as between women, even if it is your ardent desire. (An-Nisaa’ 4:129)

According to this verse, is it, as people misunderstand, compulsory in Islam that a man should have four wives?

Marrying more than one woman is just allowed in Islam. But, why? What are the logical reasons for this permission?

If you happen to give a presentation about Islam and someone asks you these questions, how are you going to answer him?
