If They Believe in the Same God, Why Are Muslims Divided into Sects?

By Editorial Staff

If all the Muslims believe in the same Allah, follow the same Qur’an, and believe in the same prophet, then why are they divided into sects?

Allah says,

And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allah upon you – when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers. And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be guided. (Aal `Imran 3:103)

Allah orders believers to obey Him and the Messenger:

O you who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger, and those charged with authority among you. If you differ in anything among yourselves, refer it to Allah and His Messenger, if you do believe in Allah and the Last Day: That is best, and most suitable for final determination. (An-Nisaa’ 4:59)

Though Muslims have to strongly hold to Allah and His Messenger, they are divided. Why is that?

Allah says:

As for those who divide their religion and break up into sects, you (O Muhammad) have no part in them in the least: their affair is with Allah: He will in the end tell them the truth of all that they did. (Al-An`am 6:159)

So, what do we learn from that and how should one answer such misconception?
